“Why not just a spreadsheet and ChatGPT?”
Fair question — it's what most of us used first, and for plenty of reefers it's fine. Here's the honest difference.
Why not a spreadsheet?
A spreadsheet holds the numbers you remember to type into it. The twin holds your system: every piece of equipment and how it's plumbed, your real effective water volume after rock and sand, your salt mix and its expected baseline, your livestock, your dosing, and every test you've ever logged or imported — connected, not in columns. When something drifts, a spreadsheet shows you a cell changed. MyCeto can show you what else in the system it touches.
Why not ChatGPT?
ChatGPT knows about reef tanks in general. It knows about your system only if you provide that information in a conversation. A new conversation will require the information again, and it answers from training data and/or information from the internet that sometimes sounds right and isn't. MyCeto's assistant answers from your actual twin — persistently — and from marine-science references we commissioned, own, and cite. When it tells you something, you can see where it came from. We actually use three AI models in answering a question, all configured to maximise the accuracy of answers.
Why not my controller's app?
Your controller's app is designed to control, measure and report. It shows you data charts from probes — and if your dosing pumps are the same brand, can show how much they dosed too. It still doesn't know all the different products you use with your system, exactly how much of an element is being dosed, what your ICP said last month, or the test you logged by hand on Tuesday. MyCeto sits above the hardware — vendor-neutral, read-only — and joins all of it into one picture.
Why not just ask on a forum?
Post a problem on a forum and the first five replies are questions: what volume? or which salt? or what are you dosing? or what's in the sump? etc. MyCeto gives you a forum banner that shares your actual setup, so the reefers helping you can see your system before they answer. The same question gets a better answer when nobody has to guess. MyCeto isn't designed as a substitute for forums — it's a complementary product. The value of forums, which will never be replaced, is interaction, opinion, and showing off your coral growth! We're just helping you get the most out of posting your forum queries or tank build threads.
And if the spreadsheet is working for you — keep it. Genuinely. MyCeto's free tier will still hold your system model and your logged history, and it'll be here when the spreadsheet stops being enough.
Even if you don't want to use the AI module, the free MyCeto plan provides fantastic features such as scheduling, alerts, equipment management and livestock management.
